“The best date night movies give you something to talk about.” – Henry Adams
My husband and I recently purchased our dream home (YAY, we finally did it!), and I can’t stress enough how exciting and exhausting this whole process has been. Although we’re overwhelmingly happy about this new chapter of our lives, the last few weeks have been crazy busy… and a little relaxation is long overdue!
For couples, building a life together is a beautiful thing. But it can become quite stressful and demanding, depending on the season. During life’s hectic moments, a romantic indoor movie night can be a simple way to recharge our emotional batteries and prioritize our relationships.
What I love about watching movies at home is that it reduces spending, saves time and energy, and often gives a more intimate experience than going out in public. Here’s a list of 10 date night movies that’ll make you laugh, cry, and cuddle with your spouse—it all depends on what you’re in the mood for!
“Date night is important in a relationship no matter how long you have been together.”
1. Sylvie’s Love
Personally, I enjoy watching older movies more than new ones, which is what makes Sylvie’s Love so special. Although it was made in 2020, it has a 1950s vibe that caters to my traditional side. There are so many things to appreciate about this movie—from romance and music to vintage cars and genuine acting. If you’re a fan of good old-fashioned love stories, then give Sylvie’s Love a try!
2. It’s Complicated
Relationships can get complicated at times. Couples break up and make up. Some even divorce only to rediscover their passion for each other much later on in life. Whatever the case may be, this movie covers a little bit of it all. What makes It’s Complicated so interesting is that it highlights the importance of prioritizing fun and intimacy in our relationships, even as we get older. If you’ve been looking for new ways to rekindle the spark in your marriage, this movie can probably give you some fun and kinky ideas!
3. You People
You People offers a lot of laughter but also a lot of insight into the struggles of interracial relationships. It’s a perfect balance of emotions, in my opinion. By now, I’m sure we all know that when you marry, you don’t just marry “the one.” You also marry their family members, traditions, and upbringing… which, depending on the circumstances… can test a relationship beyond its limits!
4. Love Jones
I can’t write about date-night movies without mentioning Love Jones (if you know, you know!). This movie has an old school vibe that combines friendship, music, poetry, intimacy, and heartbreak in ALL the right ways! I first watched this movie as a teen (because I thought I was grown…). And now, even in my late 30s, it’s still one of my favorites. This is a classic urban film and a must-watch for couples.
5. Needle in a Timestack
My husband’s a huge sci-fi fan. So, when he recommended this movie for our indoor date night, I couldn’t say no. Honestly, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about Needle in a Timestack, but I’m glad I gave it a chance. When you combine love and time travel, trust me, you’re in for something special!
6. Palm Springs
Another sci-fi movie that involves romance and time travel… but in a much more lighthearted, sweet, and comedic way. I genuinely enjoyed watching this movie from start to finish. Although it has its share of silliness, Palm Springs delivers a good balance between fantasy and real-life issues.
7. Vacation Friends
Vacation Friends is a fun summer movie that every couple might appreciate. A quiet, relaxed couple meets up with a loud, wild couple—and things get pretty awkward from there.
Research suggests that forging new friendships with other couples can increase your happiness and reduce your stress. But in this movie… it just might be the other way around!
“If we are watching movies together. Believe me, 99.9% I will be spending time to look at you.”
Sandeep Sharma
8. Loving
In comparison to all the other movies on this list, this one is definitely more moving and intense. Loving tells the true story of a couple who would do anything to be together, as I’m sure we can all relate. Set in a small Virginia town during the late 1950s, this movie has a slow, country vibe that makes it totally “date-night” worthy any time of the week.
9. Me Time
As a stay-at-home mom, I appreciated this movie about a stay-at-home dad who desperately needed some extra time for himself. Seeking a change of routine, he takes a weekend getaway with an old friend to switch things up a bit.
They say that laughter helps strengthen the bond in relationships. Well, Me Time will definitely make you and your boo laugh out loud together!
10. 50 First Dates
I love this movie because it touches on a very real issue (memory loss) in a charming, fun, and romantic way. The truth about marriage, or life in general, is that we never know what’s going to happen in the future. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is trust that love will always conquer all.
Watching this movie… I laughed, cried, and gained a little inspiration for facing tough times in my own relationship. 50 First Dates tells the story of a man who’s committed to winning his woman’s heart—over and over again!
As I mentioned before, an indoor movie night can be a fun, inexpensive way to prioritize your relationship with your spouse. And with so many genres to choose from, there’s something for everyone.
I hope you enjoy watching these date night movies as much as I did! Are any of your favorites on this list? Let me know in the comments!
